Deciding If Lasik Eye Surgery is Right For You.

By Janice Mbui

Lasik surgery is very beneficial to patients with myopia and hyperopia. LASIK surgery is one of the most common vision correction procedures and it is an outpatient procedure, with the treatment itself taking only minutes. LASIK surgery is performed on approximately one million eyes every year in the world and it is no different than any other surgery, but its drawbacks may be a little different than others.

LASIK surgery is an extremely successful vision correction procedure approved for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and in some cases, presbyopia correction . In the United States alone, laser surgery is performed on more than a million patients every year, and it is currently the most popular refractive surgery available. LASIK surgery is painless surgery. You´ll be given numbing drops before the treatment (no needles), and the laser emits only cool pulses of light that do not harm the surrounding tissue. LASIK surgery is a major purchase. That said, LASIK surgeons have plenty of clients so there must be a way that all of us are queuing up for surgery.

LASIK surgery is a commonly used refractive procedure for correcting astigmatism. With LASIK surgery, many individuals are able to experience significantly improved vision. LASIK surgery is very safe, and is one of the most effective eye surgeries performed in New York State. LASIK surgery is also not provided for people under eighteen. Women who are pregnant or nursing, or people who have preexisting eye conditions or fluctuating hormone levels due to conditions like diabetes should also consult their physicians to learn whether LASIK is right for them.

LASIK surgery is the fast and painless way to permanently change your vision. If you are ready to be free from your glasses and contact lenses, find a laser eye Surgeon near you.

LASIK surgery is generally not the best option for older patients suffering from age-related conditions that cannot be treated with the procedure, such as cataracts . Cataracts occur when the natural lens in the eye becomes cloudy, resulting in blurred vision.

Refractive errors can include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (an irregularly shaped cornea which causes blurring), and presbyopia (similar to hyperopia, a condition which causes the lens to harden). Refractive instability during pregnancy and lactation hinders the ability of the Lasik surgeon to determine actual vision problems. Refractive eye surgery is not for everyone. One type of surgery may be more suitable for one person than another.

IntraLase is safer, even for routine cases, but the difference in safety is fairly small. IntraLase creates pulses of laser energy at a rate of one pulse every one quad-trillionth of a second. Each pulse creates a microscopic bubble of water vapor and carbon dioxide just beneath the surface of the cornea. IntraLase technology is 100 times more accurate than the microkeratome in creating predictable flaps and greatly reduces the risk of complications. With IntraLase, the size and thickness of the flap is not affected by the size and shape of the eye.

Vision problems are generally caused by problems with the cornea when light is no longer focussed properly on the retina at the back of the eye. Depending if the focal point is in front or behind the retina, you are either near or far sighted. Vision correction includes more options than LASIK. Although LASIK is a great treatment for the majority, some people may require different treatment options.

Healing occurs rather quickly, and the patient usually sees an improvement in his or her vision within a few days. Healing takes three to four days and may involve some discomfort. Full recovery may take several weeks.

Asking for a referral is an excellent place to begin the LASIK consultation process. If you are found to be a good candidate, but do not feel comfortable with the staff or the way in which you were treated overall, have another consultation somewhere else! Ask your family and friends. Who else better than your family or friends who have had the procedure, to give you an honest opinion before you decide if the surgery is good for you.
